Our story

Vancouver’s top cinematic arts training institution.

Originally founded as a non-profit society in 2010, InFocus Film School offers diploma and certificate programs in film production, 3D animation, visual effects, screenwriting and digital graphic design. While our structure has changed over the years, the growth of emerging artists, storytellers, and the arts and entertainment industry as a whole has remained at the core of everything we do.

We provide a superior education through accelerated, hands-on learning. Our industry-professional instructors mentor students through interactive classes focused on building a strong portfolio. We encourage students to grow as visual storytellers, to realize their personal artistic visions, and to keep their creative autonomy as they enter Vancouver’s multi-billion dollar film industry.

Our mission

Visual storytellers need to explore their artistic identity, build on their strengths and develop a unique voice that avoids mainstream formulas.

They must also have a strong understanding of the technical and logistical tools at their disposal to realize their artistic potential. Our mission is to provide an education environment that holds true to these beliefs. We encourage experimentation and artistic risk, to create a centre of excellence where our students can learn and flourish.

Located in downtown Vancouver, InFocus is at the heart of Canada’s film industry. Known as “Hollywood North”, Vancouver is the third-largest production centre in North America, with a long history of film, TV, documentary, animation, VFX and video game production. With outstanding natural beauty and a vibrant, diverse and warm atmosphere, it’s one of the best places in the world to study film and digital screen arts.

Our education model

The age of two-hour PowerPoint presentations is over. Our classes are interactive: theory, instructor-led demos and follow-up assignments, with weekly labs that solidify knowledge in a real-life setting. In storytelling, we push students to take risks. Cinema isn’t supposed to be safe or easily defined.

As filmmakers ourselves, we strive to provide the most accessible, highest-quality education possible. Programs are intensive, led by working industry professionals and innately hands-on, and smaller classes mean more individual training so every student finds their creative voice.

Programs run ¼ to ⅒ the length of a 4-year university degree, so you’re certified and working sooner.

Alumni success

A school’s relationship with its students never truly ends, and our dedication doesn’t stop at graduation. We hire alumni to collaborate on films with partner organizations, provide ongoing mentorship from our instructors, and connect alumni with industry professionals and job opportunities.

A letter from our President & CEO

Welcome to InFocus.

Since InFocus first opened its doors in January 2010, this school has been a home for people who see the world in frames and scenes, and who can’t stop imagining the stories that belong in them. I am honoured to carry that legacy forward, and to build on the creative, project-based, career-focused foundation our founder and our instructors established.

My life’s work rests on a simple belief: see the potential in people, then build the pathway to it. That belief is why I came to InFocus. Here, raw talent becomes a working career. Our instructors are working professionals who bring the industry into the classroom, our class sizes stay deliberately small, and every program is built around the projects you will make and the portfolio you will leave with.

Vancouver is one of the most exciting places in the world to make films. Hundreds of productions shoot here every year, and our graduates are part of them: on set, in the edit suite and in the visual effects studios behind the stories audiences love.
